The Celebrant’s Code Of Practice
The Code of Practice applies to all registered marriage celebrants, operating under subdivision C and category D of the Marriage Act 1961.
The Code includes the following standards of excellence:
⚭ to maintain professional personal presentation
⚭ to be on time for meetings, the rehearsal and the ceremony
⚭ to provide accurately filled out documents and a ceremony that follows the legal order and requirements to make it a valid marriage
⚭ to provide information for the couple to attend pre-marriage education
⚭ to provide an area which is appropriate and comfortable for the couple to share personal and confidential information
⚭ to store hard copy documents in a locked file in a secure location, to store electronic information in controlled databases with security, including password access and virus software and to responsibly and appropriately destroy all unnecessary documentation
How to Make a Complaint
Complaints about Commonwealth registered marriage celebrants are handled by the Attorney General's Department. Complaints can be made if a celebrant has broken the rules in The Marriage Act of 1961, Marriage Regulations 2017 or the Code Of Practice for Marriage Celebrants
